Skincare Tips
Hello, Beauty Bunch! It's JustJennifer Beauty here, diving deep into a topic that's both personal and universal: how stress impacts our skin.
Stress is an inevitable part of life, but its effects can be more than just emotional.
Today, I'm sharing not only the science behind stress's impact on our skin but also personal insights from my own experience with the passing of my stepfather, Neil, earlier this year.
THE SKIN-STRESS CONNECTION
Our skin is our body's largest organ and a reflection of our internal well-being. When stressed, our body releases cortisol, the primary stress hormone. This hormonal surge can lead to increased oil production in our sebaceous glands, leading to acne breakouts. Additionally, stress can exacerbate skin conditions like eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.
When my stepfather, Neil, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour just before Christmas 2023 and died the following month.
His wish was to die at home, so I left my home in London, and moved in with them both on the Isle of Wight to do end of life care with my mother.
I experienced firsthand how emotional turmoil translated into skin troubles. My usually calm complexion became more reactive, with breakouts and dry patches, it looked really dull, and I developed resting fine lines that hadn’t been there before. This was a testament to the internal struggle I was facing.
MINDFULNESS AND RELAXATION
Although it’s impossible to avoid stress completely, and some months are more stressful than others, it’s handy to use techniques like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises. These practices can significantly reduce stress levels and help in calming the mind and reducing cortisol levels.
REGULAR EXERCISE
Physical activity is a powerful stress reliever. It pumps up endorphins, our brain's feel-good neurotransmitters, promoting overall well-being.
Incorporating yoga, meditation and regular walks into my daily routine became a sanctuary for me, offering moments of peace amidst the storm of emotions.
HYDRATION AND BALANCED DIET
Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a balanced diet rich in antioxidants can combat the negative effects of stress on your skin. Foods high in vitamins A, C, and E, and omega-3 fatty acids, can be particularly beneficial.
Shifting to a diet filled with leafy greens, nuts, and fatty fish helped nourish my skin from the inside, reflecting in its improved resilience and texture.
INVEST IN A THICKER MOISTURISER
Opt for gentle, non-irritating skincare products. Stress can make your skin more sensitive, so it's crucial to avoid harsh chemicals.
Maintaining a regular skincare routine can provide a sense of control and normalcy. When you are extremely stressed, you may not have the motivation to have a regular skincare routine, but cleansing, moisturising, and applying sunscreen daily are essential steps.
I leaned into my skincare routine, finding comfort in the familiarity and the nurturing aspect of self-care. It became a moment of tranquility each day, helping my skin - and my heart - to heal.
JOURNEY TOWARDS HEALING
The journey through stress and its impact on our skin is as much about emotional healing as it is about physical care. As I navigated my grief, I knew the importance of being gentle with myself, both emotionally and in my skincare.
